Tai Chi Quan is an internal style of martial arts that has been practiced in China for hundreds of years. Originally developed as a form of fighting, Tai Chi has been expanded and some styles simplified over the years to allow people to practice it for its numerous health benefits. At its core, Tai Chi is a system of soft, relaxed, movements that involve flowing shifts in balance between one leg and the next. The overall focus of Tai Chi helps to promote mental and physical well-being through cultivating one's internal energy or chi (sometimes written as 'qi'). The major styles of tai chi includes; Chen,Yang, Wu, Wu (another style with the same name) and Sun. TCWR teaches the Chen and Yang style Tai Chi. The continuous shifts in weight from one leg to the next helps to strengthen and condition the legs as well as the
tendons and ligaments of the joints in your ankles, knees and hips. The attention to maintaining proper posture and balance builds strength in the hip flexors, abdominal, as well as lower and upper back
muscles.
The flowing rhythmic movements of Tai Chi help to increase the body's range of motion as well as improve one's sense of coordination and promote deep breathing. In recent years, Tai Chi has become more prevalent in the western world especially as the associated health benefits attained from the practice of Tai Chi become increasingly supported through research conducted by the western scientific community.
